2007 Benchmark

2007 Corporate Benchmark
In October 2007, the results of the first NextGeneration benchmark were launched at a high-profile event by the then Housing Minister Yvette Cooper. The report Building a Sustainable Future ranked the UKs top 20 homebuilders according to their sustainability performance in a new report..
The NextGeneration report named The Berkeley Group, Taylor Woodrow and George Wimpey (now merged to form Taylor Wimpey), Countryside Properties and Crest Nicholson as the top companies in terms of their sustainability performance. The report showed that the 20 companies responsible for building more than half of all new homes in the UK last year have recognised the importance of sustainability and are getting to grips with the challenge of making all new homes zero-carbon from 2016 - essential if they are going to contribute to achieving the UK governments target of reducing emissions by 26% by 2020. However, the report also reveals that homebuilders scored lowest in addressing their impact on the environment - which doesnt bode well for achieving those tougher regulatory standards.
The benchmark report drew an important “line in the sand” for the home building industry by establishing where developers are strong and where they are weaker on sustainability issues. It explores the environmental, political, commercial and practical challenges that must be bridged if sustainable homes and communities are to become a reality.
Praising the report for its clarity and value, the Minister called for greater effort in creating sustainable homes. "Its not just about what government can do," she said. "Government can set the long-term framework, but all the drive and energy has to come from the private sector and housing associations as well."
