2009 Corporate Benchmark
Sustainability remains firmly on homebuilders’ agenda despite recessionary pressures
The results of the 2009 NextGeneration Corporate Benchmark were launched on 9th November 2009 at the Jones Lang LaSalle offices in central London, with Sir Bob Kerslake (Chief Executive, Homes and Communities Agency) giving the keynote speech at a well-attended event. The NextGeneration report "Laying Firm Foundations - UK homebuilders make progress in addressing sustainability" ranks the UKs top 25 homebuilders according to their sustainability performance.

The Berkeley Group, Crest Nicholson and Miller Homes all emerged as leaders in the 2009 benchmark, with the Berkeley Group showing a particularly strong performance ahead of its peers. Inspace Partnerships and Barratt Developments completed the top five performing companies. All NextGeneration members were commended for their ongoing commitment to driving best practice in sustainability.
The NextGeneration analysis showed that homebuilders have placed a strong focus on research and development since the previous benchmark and have set challenging commitments to ensure new building standards are met. Building on the progress made by the sector will be crucial for the government to meet its long-term targets for UK homebuilding. While the steps made in relation to improving product efficiency have been encouraging, a continued focus on addressing climate change must develop alongside other aspects of sustainability. The report provides recommendations to both industry and government as to how this could be progressed.

Sir Bob Kerslake, Chief Executive, HCA said: “It is good to see that sustainability has remained high on the agenda for house builders, despite the economic downturn. A recession is no excuse to lower standards or reduce sustainability goals and at the HCA, we are pleased to be working with many of the housebuilders listed on developing some of the most innovative and sustainable homes in the country.”
