2010 Sustainable Communities Benchmark
Social and economic sustainability become increasingly important for home builders
The results of the 2010 NextGeneration benchmark were launched on 15th November 2010 at Jones Lang LaSalles offices in central London by Paul Finch OBE, Chair of the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) at a well attended event. The NextGeneration report "More than Bricks and Mortar - UK home builders progress in creating sustainable communities" ranks the top 25 UK homebuilders performance in delivering sustainable communities.
The Berkeley Group, Crest Nicholson and Miller Homes all emerged as leaders in the 2010 benchmark, with Willmott Dixon and Keepmoat Group completing the top five performing companies. All NextGeneration members were commended for their ongoing commitment to driving best practice in sustainability.
| Homebuilders have begun to respond to the challenge of delivering sustainable communities which has resulted in inclusion of sustainable communities issues in company reporting alongside environmental issues, which is an encouraging step. However, the industry now needs to consider how to also integrate development and delivery of sustainable communities into the developments they design and build. The use of recognised standards, such as the Code for Sustainable Homes, Lifetime Homes, Secured by Design and the Building for Life standard to drive forward improved performance in this area will be vital. Longer term engagement, increased monitoring of a developments success as judged by its residents and finding solutions to environmental problems at the community level will also be vital to deliver social and economic sustainability. |

Government also has a key role to take in resolving issues with the standards it currently advocates for new housing, as well as the wider planning system and in co-ordinating responses to problems best solved at the community level, such as infrastructure.
