Our mission
Housing plays a crucial role in shaping people’s lives. The design and form of the built environment can determine the nature of communities, and influence our health and well-being. Alongside this, the environmental impacts of housing are significant – living in our homes accounts for nearly 30% of the UK’s carbon emissions and over 50% of all water use.
While new build homes account for only 1% of the existing housing stock, they present a significant opportunity to deliver long-term environmental, social and economic benefits. The imperative to deliver sustainable communities is now a key policy objective for the UK Government which has set a challenging target for the industry – to deliver zero carbon sustainable housing from 2016.
It is against this backdrop that NextGeneration was launched in 2006, with the mission of being an industry-driven initiative to drive best practice in sustainability into the heart of the residential development sector.
What we do
NextGeneration is a
membership based organisation, consisting of many of the UK’s largest homebuilders, overseen by a high-level
Executive Committee representing investors, NGO’s and the affordable housing sector which ensures the independence of the initiative. Once again, the Executive Committee includes representatives from
WWF-UK and the
Homes and Communities Agency, while a number of investor organisations are being consulted at present in order to confirm a representative for 2010.
NextGeneration aims to enable the industry to understand what opportunities and risks the sustainable housing agenda presents. NextGeneration has been welcomed widely within the industry and is formally
endorsed by the UK-Green Building Council and the Energy Savings Trust.
