What we do
NextGeneration is a membership based benchmark, consisting of many of the UK’s largest homebuilders, overseen by a high-level Executive Committee of WWF-UK and the Homes and Communities Agency.
NextGeneration aims to enable the industry to understand what opportunities and risks the sustainable housing agenda presents through benchmarking their performance. The Initiative has been welcomed widely within the industry and is formally endorsed by the UK-Green Building Council.

Housing plays a crucial role in shaping people’s lives. The design and form of the built environment can determine the nature of communities, and influence our health and well-being. Alongside this, the environmental impacts of housing are significant – living in our homes accounts for nearly 30% of the UK’s carbon emissions and over 50% of all water use.
While new build homes account for only 1% of the existing housing stock, they present a significant opportunity to deliver long-term environmental, social and economic benefits. The imperative to deliver sustainable communities is now a key policy objective for the UK Government which has set a challenging target for the industry – to deliver zero carbon sustainable housing from 2016.
It is against this backdrop that NextGeneration was launched in 2006, with the mission of being an industry-driven initiative to drive best practice in sustainability into the heart of the residential development sector.
NextGeneration’s 2009 benchmark assessed the top 25 UK homebuilders based on their sustainability strategy, governance and risk management and their impact on the environment and on society.
The 2010 benchmark has the theme Sustainable Communities and will seek to assess companies based upon their strategy, commitment to and delivery of sustainable communities, considering environmental, social and economic issues.
Any company with residential development activities can join NextGeneration as a member. Membership provides access to a range of services including our industry-leading benchmarks.
